Unix Environment

CLA-OIT runs a large number of Unix-based servers for a wide variety of needs, primarily research. With a single account, you can access all servers and resources in a unified manner.

Eligibility

CLA faculty, staff, and graduate students

What We Do

  • Provide secure hosting in University-approved datacenters with high availability features.
  • Support shared application servers.
    • Ubuntu Linux servers with up to 16 processor cores and 64GB RAM
    • access to all home directory and project spaces
    • licensed and free applications
  • Support file servers.
    • home directory space and shared project space for all authenticated users, available on all application servers
  • Support shared database servers.
    • running MySQL and Postgres providing free database instances for research and instructional use
  • Support shared web servers, offering space for project websites.
  • Support terminal server environment.
    • provides a graphical user interface to access all resources on these servers
    • can be used securely even when you are not on campus
  • Provide backup and restore services for data on file servers.

What We Don't Do

  • Provide superuser access to servers.
  • Support applications with node-locked or user-locked licenses.
  • Support hosting of private data such as HIPAA, FERPA, and PCI.

What You Need to Do

  • Respect others when using server resources and limit usage to appropriate levels.

  • Support applications with node-locked or user-locked licenses.

What We Don't Do

  • Provide superuser access to servers.
  • Support hosting of private data such as HIPAA, FERPA, and PCI.

What You Need to Do

  • Consult with us to select hardware that meets your needs and satisfies University requirements for equipment to be hosted in datacenters.
