Basic Novell Services and Policies

Who is eligible?
Although the file server is primarily for departmental printed budget (PB) faculty and staff, accounts can be requested for non-printed budget (NPB) staff, students, and other workers as well.

File Sharing
CLA-OIT offers space on its Novell Servers for Departmental Staff and Faculty needs. Each department receives its own folder/ directory. Each departmental folder contains personal directories for each user, as well as shared directories for sharing files among group members. Various access restrictions can be placed on the files and folders depending on the needs of the department.

Network Printing
Network printing with Novell offers many advantages. It reduces the workload on your local workstation by acting as the print queue and print server. Printers can be restricted to certain users and departments can also monitor their network printer usage.

Backups
An important benefit of using CLA Office of Information Technology Novell services, is that files on CLA Office of Information Technology servers are backed up daily, Monday through Friday. So if the day comes when the hard drive on your computer crashes or somehow your report accidentally gets deleted by the "I love you 2" virus, you can feel rest assured that we have a backup.

After-hours server support is now available
CLA faculty and staff may request after-hours assistance with servers maintained by CLA Office of Information Technology by calling 763-572-4027. An answering service will convey your message to the server administrator on call. Please continue to call the CLA-OIT help desk at 612-624-4357 during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

Access
CLA Office of Information Technology offers secure folders to hold sensitive private information. Network administrators can restrict accesses to files and or folders to a selected individual or groups. Different levels of access can be granted to different users. Persons can have read and write access, or just read only. CLA Office of
Information Technology network administrators can work with departmental
administrators to determine what works best for your department.

Passwords
New passwords will be required of users every 120 days. Passwords should be a mix of letters and non-letter characters and need to be at least five characters long.

Strong passwords have the following characteristics:

  • Contain both upper and lower case characters (e.g., a-z, A-Z)
  • Have digits and punctuation characters as well as letters (e.g., 0-9, !@#$%^&*()_ +|~ - =\‘{}[]:";’<>?,./)
  • Are at least eight alphanumeric characters long.
  • Are not a word in any language, slang, dialect, jargon, etc.
  • Are not based on personal information, names of family, etc.
  • Passwords should never be written down or stored on-line. Try to create passwords that can be easily remembered. One way to do this is create a password based on a song title, affirmation, or other phrase. For example, the phrase might be: "This May Be One Way To Remember" and the password could be: "TmB1w2R!" or "Tmb1W>r~" or some other variation.
