Computer Disposal

Keep After Replacement

At the end of the supported lifespan, PB computers may be returned for $50 credit or purchased by the department for $100—provided alternative professional IT support is identified. However, NPBS, TS, and GS computers older than 3 years must be returned to CLA-OIT for recycling. Since initial purchasing costs were shared, departments will be credited $50 for each returned computer. NPB computers older than three years must also be returned.

Purchasing Old Computers

The Service Desk will erase the hard drives of all returned computers. Depending on its value, a computer may then be sold, donated to local schools, or recycled.

The CLA-OIT Service Desk does not sell computers to individuals. A department may obtain ownership (for $100 per computer) and then sell the computer to a student, staff, or faculty member according to University guidelines and for the current market value (plus tax). The Service Desk can determine the market value for departments (612-624-4357).

Note: Every computer must be securely erased before ownership is transferred to another organization or individual.
